Some big changes are coming to South Australia’s roads, after BHP inked a new transport deal with Aurizon.
In the $1.5 billion deal, copper from Olympic Dam, Carrapateena and Prominent Hill will be moved via rail instead of road.
Over 11,000 truck trips between Pimba and Port Adelaide, spanning 13-million kilometres, will be replaced.

BHP Asset President Anna Wiley said using rail will be a much neater solution.
“The shift to more rail transport will improve road safety, lower emissions, create local business opportunities, and deliver significant synergies for our business,”she said in a statement yesterday.
Around 244 bundles of copper cathode, each weighing over 2.5 tonnes, are moved via freight each day.
