Barunga West Council has welcomed back Chief Executive Officer Maree Wauchope, following an extended period of leave.

Ms Wauchope stepped away from her role last year to undergo preventative treatment for melanoma, and has now completed her treatment successfully.

In a statement, Mayor Leonie Kerley said the Council was thrilled to see Ms Wauchope return in good health.

“We are delighted to have Maree back at the helm after this challenging period,” she said. “Her leadership, vision and dedication have been greatly missed.”

Mayor Kerley also extended her thanks to Interim CEO Paul Simpson, who has led the organisation since January 13 and played a key role in maintaining momentum during Ms Wauchope’s absence.

“Paul has provided steady leadership and ensured continuity in key projects and community engagement,” she said.

Ms Wauchope expressed her gratitude for the support received throughout her treatment and said she was excited to return to the role.

“It’s great to be back, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead with the team,” she said. “I’m especially thankful for the support from Council during what’s been a challenging time for some of us.”

She also used the occasion to advocate for greater awareness around skin cancer prevention.

“I’d encourage everyone to get their skin checked regularly by a dermatologist or skin clinic,” she said. “Melanoma is a cunning disease, and early detection really does save lives.”

Ms Wauchope returns on 4 August.
