The Federal Government is preparing to deliver a rescue support package for Nyrstar’s smelters in Port Pirie and Hobart.
It comes as the company warns it is losing tens of millions of dollars each month due to subsidised competition from China.
Nyrstar has been calling for urgent state and federal intervention to keep the smelters running and safeguard Australia’s sovereign processing facility.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed this week the rescue package is ‘very close’, with negotiations underway alongside the South Australian and Tasmanian governments.
While exact details are yet to be announced, the package is expected to build on the $70 million already committed to the Hobart facility.
Nyrstar employs around 1,400 workers across the two sites.
