Whyalla footy fans were treated to more than just a close contest on Saturday, as AFL cult hero Brendan Fevola found himself at the centre of a heated on-field scuffle during his guest appearance for South Whyalla.

The former Carlton Blues and Brisbane Lions forward pulled on the Roosters guernsey for the derby clash against Central Whyalla at Memorial Oval.

Tempers flared in the final quarter when Fevola was jabbed in the back by a Central Whyalla player.

In footage from live-stream cameras, Fevola turned and shoved the Central player, sparking a melee that quickly escalated. Spectator footage captured the 44-year-old grappling with multiple players before being dragged to the ground.

‘Fev’ was handed a yellow card and benched for ten minutes in the final quarter of the game.

Despite the on-field drama, the footy legend was all smiles post-match, mingling with supporters and hosting a promotional event at the club.

While no formal report was made by umpires, the fiery cameo adds to Fevola’s colourful string of local footy appearances this year – including a game alongside Guy Sebastian in Victoria.

South Whyalla edged out their rivals by just two points, 6.10 (46) to 6.8 (44).
