Wet wipes are causing persistent sewer problems in Port Pirie, prompting another intervention by SA Water crews.
Over the last year, the city saw 14 blockages due to flushed wet wipes, the highest in regional South Australia.
SA Water’s Dr. Daniel Hoefel emphasized that not flushing the wet wipes and binning them can prevent such issues.
Unlike toilet paper, wet wipes don’t break down easily, clumping together and clogging sewage flow.
A substantial mass of wet wipes was discovered in a sewer pipe, requiring a specialized truck to remove them.
A Water recorded about 1,200 wet wipe-related blockages in their sewer network in the 2022-23 period.
