One of the country’s most infamous serial killers has been granted parole.
Now 45-years-old, James Vlassakis was the youngest of four involved in the notorious ‘bodies in the barrels’ murders between 1992 and 1999.
His testimony against the others helped convict John Bunting and Robert Wagner.
Parole Board Chair Frances Nelson KC said Vlassakis’s institutional behaviour had been excellent.
“We have to look at whether or not he presents a risk to the community and in our assessment, he does not,” she said.
Vlassakis will not walk free just yet, as there is a 60 day period for the Attorney-General, Police Commissioner or Commissioner for Victims’ Rights to appeal the decision.
