Pies hold off plucky Tigers

COLLINGWOOD remains unbeaten this AFLW season after accounting for struggling Richmond by 17 points.

The Magpies inflicted more pain on the Tigers, as they led from start to finish at Punt Rd on Sunday to run out winners 7.6 (48) to 4.7 (31).

Collingwood had too much class for Richmond, which is still searching for their maiden AFLW win after nine-straight losses dating back to their inaugural match in February 2020.

The Tigers gained enough of the ball, particularly in the second term, but lacked polish up forward and finished with just four goals from 32 inside-50 entries to Collingwood’s 25.

Poor discipline also cost the home team, with Chloe Molloy’s tough set-shot from the pocket on the three-quarter-time siren turning into an easy goal after the Tigers gave away a free kick.

Magpies stars Brittany Bonnici (30 possessions), Jaimee Lambert (25) and Brianna Davey (23) stamped their mark on the match with commanding performances.

Irishwoman Aishling Sheridan was a livewire up forward with two scintillating running goals to continue her breakout season.

WNBL basketballer Monique Conti was comfortably the Tigers’ best player as they fought the game out, but there were other bright signs for the future.

Last year’s No.1 draft pick Ellie McKenzie booted her first career major when she sped past her opponent inside-50 to run into an open goal-square in the third quarter.

The 19-year-old backed it up with another goal late in the match when she converted a tricky set-shot.

The Magpies join Fremantle and Melbourne as undefeated teams, while the Brisbane Lions should also rack up a third win when they host West Coast on Monday.
