ADF bolsters Gold Coast Games security

Soldiers will be seen on Gold Coast streets during the Commonwealth Games with the Australian Defence Force bolstering security for the showpiece event.

More than 1000 ADF personnel and RAAF aircraft have been added to a nationally-integrated security team tasked with ensuring a safe Games on the tourist strip.

The federal government announced on Tuesday the ADF, federal police and border force would all support the Queensland Police Service as lead agency at the April 4-15 event.

Under the codename Operation ATLAS, Defence Minister Marise Payne said the ADF would deploy more than 1000 personnel and "soldiers would be visible on the streets".

Senator Payne said helicopters and aircraft would also conduct flights overhead to survey key areas and help operations in built-up areas.

"Defence has extensive experience providing security assistance to major national events, including the G20 Leaders' Summit in 2014, the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, and the 2000 Sydney Olympics," she said.

"ADF's training is designed to ensure we can manage any request if called upon by QPS throughout the duration of the games."

AFP officers will work closely with the QPS, and extra border force officers will be on duty at Gold Coast airport before and during the Games.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said all agencies were working tirelessly to deliver a safe and secure event.

"We cannot be complacent," he said. "Security arrangements for the Commonwealth Games remain under constant review to ensure we are best-placed to meet any challenges."
