David Basham and Dan van Holst Pellekaan met with Mayor of the Port Pirie Regional Council Leon Stephens yesterday to discuss the ban on fishing in the Port Pirie area.
In September a ban was brought in following concerns about heavy metal contamination in the Port Pirie water ways, which has since been eased somewhat with catch and release fishing allowed again earlier this month.
Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham said testing is underway, and a ruling on the safety of fishing in the area could arrive before the end of the year.
Mr Basham said they "need one more day of fishing which will be done next week, subject to weather, that'll give us enough fish to meet the requirements of the testing needs and those fish will be sent away for testing, and we should get our results to have an answer towards the end of November/early December."
