BHP has recorded its best year for gold and copper production at Olympic Dam since taking over the mine in South Australia’s Far North in 2005.

Copper production at the Dam has increased by 20 per cent to 205,000 tonnes for the year, which the company has attributed to improved smelter stability and strong underground mine performance.

It also achieved a record gold production of 146,000 ounces for the 2021 financial year.

Olympic Dam uranium production, however, fell 11 per cent for the year to 3267 tonnes, due to a 40 per cent production slump in the June quarter, when just 614 tonnes of uranium was produced.

The Roxby Downs copper production for the 2022 financial year is expected to decrease, as a result of major smelter maintenance plans between August 2021 and February 2022.

BHP also increased its iron ore production of Western Australia, as overseas demand continued to drive record prices.

The company’s Quarterly Activities Report was presented to the Australian Securities Exchange on Tuesday morning.
