Key fishing stakeholders in Port Pirie have met to discuss a way forward through the city’s fishing ban.

A forum was held last month with SA Health, the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA), Port Pirie Regional Council and the Port Pirie Amateur Anglers Association, giving local amateur fisherman their first opportunity to ask questions to SA Health and PIRSA directly.

With further context on the ban highlighted at the meeting, the Port Pirie Amateur Anglers Association is now planning to brainstorm some ideas with the community to take back to the EPA moving forward.

"We only thought it was the metal levels in the sediment, but now we have been shown records of levels in all different types of species of fish," he said.

The fishing ban was originally introduced in September last year, and was recently extended for another year, until September 15, 2022.
