According to new research, all LGAs across the region except Roxby Downs, are lagging behind other parts of the state in digital inclusion.

All council areas from Whyalla to Peterborough returned a score of between 10 and 16 points lower than the Adelaide metro digital rate.

However, Roxby Downs is the only LGA outside of the greater Adelaide area that is above the state average.

Digital inclusion is about ensuring residents can make full use of digital technologies, to access work, services, education, online businesses and contact family and friends.

The South Australian Council of Social Service CEO, Ross Womersley, says “Digital inclusion is important in general because commerce, employment, education, social interactions and government services and information are all online, so being online is necessary to fully participate in society."

"In regional South Australia it is increasingly essential and basic because digital technology can help overcome social isolation and distance from all sorts of vital services and markets,” says Mr Womersley.

The report from the Australian Digital Inclusion Index shows the state is also lagging behind the national average for digital inclusion, with almost all regional SA local government areas scoring below the state average.
