New Restrictions Coming Into Play For Port Augusta Once New Bridge Opens

PA map

The newly constructed Joy Baluch Bridge duplication will shortly open to traffic in both directions.

Once the new bridge opens, the old bridge will temporarily close to traffic for approximately six months to allow refurbishment works to be undertaken.

Additionally, the junction of Mackay Street with Augusta Highway will be temporarily closed to traffic to facilitate its upgrade to a signalised intersection.

This upgrade will include a dedicated right turn lane, pedestrian crossing, Shared Use Path and new pavements.

The following traffic arrangements will be in place from 6am Sunday, May 15:

On the Eastern side of the bridge, the junction of Augusta Highway and Mackay Street will be temporarily closed with a detour via Flinders Terrace and Young Street, and pedestrian access from the bridge to the central business district will be maintained via a temporary signalised crossing just east of Tassie Street while the new ramp for the Shared Use Path is under construction.

On the Western side, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction between Burgoyne Street and the Westside Foreshore, and the right turn from Augusta Highway into Burgoyne Street will remain temporarily closed, with a detour via Mildred and Mellor Streets.

Some noise disturbance can be expected at times while these works are completed, however the work will be managed to minimise disturbance to nearby residents and businesses as much as practically possible.

Signage will be in place to alert motorists of any temporary changes and speed restrictions.
