Late last week the developer of a planned new $138 million hotel venture on the Whyalla foreshore announced the construction will commence later this year.
The multi-storey hotel is slated for the site of the Whyalla Foreshore Motor Inn, and is still subject to a sale with the current owners.
Developer, Thrive Construct, says the Whyalla absolute-beachfront site will include 164 hotel suites and will be largely made of prefabricated modular construction using advanced materials such as laminated timber and green steel, a nod to the region’s steel-making history.
The hotel will provide a stepping stone for visitors to explore the Eyre Peninsula, and make the most of the landscapes, unique marine life and immersive seafood experiences.
Last year, the Eyre Peninsula accommodated 482,000 overnight visitors, and generated $488 million in visitor expenditure.
The operation of the hotel will provide up to 50 permanent and many more indirect jobs in the Whyalla community.
Work is expected to be completed by early 2024.
