Centre Alliance Senator Rex Patrick has called on the federal government to reconsider the Woomera Prohibited Area as a location for the national radioactive waste management facility.
The Defence Department dismissed the possibility of using the military testing range due to the impracticability and intolerable risk.
There are currently 10,000 drums of low and intermediate level waste stored at Evetts Field, 1.3kms from the Woomera Range head.
Two sites in Kimba and one in Wallerberdina Station near Hawker are currently nominated to host the radioactive waste management facility.
The ballot to pick a site has been delayed until next year as the Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation’s Supreme Court injunction will be heard in court in January.
