As children around the state return to school today, for most it will be business as usual, however for many year seven students it means they’re even closer to high school.
And in two and a half years, seventh grade will join high schools around the state and families are being invited to have their say on how the change will happen.
In a new approach, which is modelled off Western Australia, some families will have a choice to keep their year 7 child in primary school, if the school is located more than 20 kilometres by road from their nearest high school.
The option would only be available during the three-year state-wide transition which is aimed at making the changeover as smooth as possible.
Community forums on the issue will be conducted around the state starting tonight, find out where your nearest forum is on our website.
