Port Pirie Man Creates Illegal Artificial Reef

Trolleys

A 48-year-old man from Port Pirie has been fined for attempting to create an artificial reef in the Spencer Gulf.

After dumping more than 200 kg of scrap metal into the Gulf, he initially denied any involvement in creating the reef, but after an investigation was carried out the man admitted to disposing of litter in marine waters.

Stephen Barry of The Environment Protection Authority reminds fishers that metal breaks down over time, creating pollution and further hazards.

The man has been fined $2,000 for dumping the items and then charged a further $120 in Victims of Crime Levy.
