Whyalla Airport’s proposed security upgrades have been discussed at a recent Senate Inquiry, where Mayor Clare McLaughlin and Acting CEO Kristen Clark have presented Whyalla City Council’s position on the matter.

Following the new regulations, Whyalla Airport will be required to implement passenger and checked baggage screening, of which Council are in support of despite, “Barely meeting the minimum criteria,” said Mr Clark.

Only a small number of flights that leave Whyalla each week exceed the seating capacity, of which the screening criteria is based on, with Mayor McLaughlin explaining to the committee that the city could not meet the costs of the necessary upgrade, with council looking to the federal government to meet the costs.
