Federal crossbench MPs are putting pressure on the government to phase out live sheep exports and want to debate the issue in parliament.

However the coalition wants to postpone the debate until parliament returns next February, which Centre Alliance MP Rebekha Sharkie says is not good enough.

"Quite frankly I don't think we can trust this industry to manage itself. We need to transition away from this industry and actually look at this as an opportunity for industry, for sheep, for farmers and for people living in regional Australia to have good quality jobs," Ms Sharkie told the lower house on Wednesday.
