If there is one thing we have learned since 2010, it is that you can never truly keep a good Minion down, or even a moderately well-behaved one. Universal Pictures and Illumination have just gifted us our first look at “Minions & Monsters”, the third instalment in the standalone Minions series and a staggering seventh entry in the Despicable Me universe.

The Minions have officially run out of bosses to accidentally incinerate and have decided to take matters into their own hands. Set against the glitzy, high-stakes backdrop of 1920s Hollywood, the film follows our favourite goggle-wearing trio as they attempt to conquer the silver screen. In a classic “be careful what you wish for” scenario, their quest for movie stardom leads them to a mysterious spellbook. Naturally, instead of finding a good lighting technician, they accidentally summon real-life monsters, threatening the very planet they were trying to entertain.

The A-Team Returns

Pierre Coffin is back in the director’s chair. The Oscar nominee, who helmed the first three Despicable Me films, isn’t just calling the shots from behind the camera; he’s also reprising his role as the voice (or rather, voices) of the Minions.

The script sees Coffin reuniting with Brian Lynch (The Secret Life of Pets), while the production is steered by the reliable hands of Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan. In a rare move for a major studio, the release date was actually moved forward by a full year, jumping from June 2027 to this coming July. Clearly, the world’s appetite for “Banana!” is more urgent than anyone anticipated.

A Box Office Behemoth

It is hard to overstate just how much of a juggernaut this franchise has become. With a global box office haul exceeding $5.6 billion, the Minions are effectively the masters of the animated world. Their previous outing, Minions: The Rise of Gru, didn’t just rake in $940 million; it also broke the internet with the “Gentleminions” TikTok trend, which saw teenagers worldwide donning suits to watch the film in cinemas.
