A huge new report has revealed how much Australian life has changed, and honestly, some of the findings feel VERY familiar.
Australia is apparently getting smarter, staying home longer and running on empty.
The latest Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey has taken a look at how our lives have changed over more than two decades, and there are some pretty interesting results.
The report follows around 17,000 Australians and has been tracking everything from work and education to housing, relationships and wellbeing since 2001.
We’re More Educated
Australians are better educated than ever, particularly women.
More than half of Australian women aged 25 to 44 now hold a university degree.
There’s just one tiny problem.
Around half of Australian workers also say they’re over-educated for the job they’re doing.
So, congratulations on the degree… now who’s ready to use it?
We’re Absolutely Exhausted
The report also found Australians report less energy and more fatigue than a decade ago.
The biggest decline was among women aged 25 to 34.
And with housing costs, bills and everyday expenses putting more pressure on households, it’s perhaps not surprising that we’re feeling a little… cooked.
And We’re Still Living At Home
Perhaps the biggest change is happening in the family home.
Half of Australians aged 18 to 29 were living with their parents in 2024.
Back in 2001, that figure was 39 per cent.
Rising housing costs, longer time spent studying and young people taking longer to establish themselves financially are all being linked to the change.
