Whyalla’s adjusted annual business plan and draft budget for 2023-24 has been adopted – including a rate rise of 8.7% – an increase equal to $2.35 per week for the average household.
The rate rise is on par with others across the Eyre Peninsula, where rises between 7.9 and 11.5% have been proposed.
Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone says extensive community consultation was undertaken over several months to reach this decision, and responses largely indicated residents understood the rate rise was necessary to cover CPI while ensuring no services were lost and Council debt was not increased.
Mayor Stone says this is the minimum increase they could implement without compromising day-to-day-services and major community projects.
