Australia’s most popular car is facing an urgent recall over a potentially fatal safety defect.

Ford has recalled its 2022 Ranger and family-friendly Everest models, fearing a software glitch could put drivers and passengers at risk.

According to the Department of Transport, a software defect may cause the transmission to shift into park if the battery drops below a critical level. This can happen when the vehicle is moving at speeds under 6km/h.

“This may cause a sudden stop without the rear brake lamps illuminating as intended,” they said.

“A sudden stop whilst driving at low speed and the rear brake lamps not illuminating as intended could increase the potential risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Ford will notify all affected owners in writing, advising them to schedule a free repair appointment at their preferred Ford Authorised Dealership.

The recall impacts nearly 250 of Australia’s popular family and work-friendly four-wheel-drives.

This includes vehicles that were part of a previous recall of nearly 5,000 2021–2023 models. Details of the earlier recall can be found here.
